The American Red Cross recommends people earn CPR certification, but the following are steps to follow to help a conscious choking infant who is younger than a year old:

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

Infant is coughing forcefully.

Infant can’t cry, cough or breathe.

Baby is coughing weakly or making high-pitched sounds.

WHAT TO DO

Check the infant and the scene.

Send someone to call 911 or the local emergency number. If alone, provide one minute of care before calling.

Give five back blows and five chest thrusts, repeating until the object is coughed up and the infant begins to breathe on his or her own, or the infant becomes unconscious.
