Crew slips past Wizards, 2-1

COLUMBUS (AP) — Eddie Gaven and Stefani Miglioranzi scored their first goals of the season and the Columbus Crew beat the Kansas City Wizards 2-1 Wednesday night.

Gaven sent a left-footed strike between the legs of Wizards captain Jimmy Conrad that beat goalkeeper Kevin Hartman from 13 yards in the 56th minute.

Four minutes later, the Crew (2-4-6) doubled its lead when Miglioranzi headed home a corner kick from fellow South American Guillermo Barros Schelotto of Argentina.

Miglioranzi’s header floated just beyond the outstretched hands of Hartman and into the upper-right corner of the net.

Defender Jack Jewsbury put Kansas City (6-3-2) on the scoreboard late in second-half stoppage time with his first tally of the season.

The win was Columbus’ first since a 1-0 victory over D.C. United on April 28, and snapped the Wizards’ four-game unbeaten streak (2-0-2).

Crew goalkeeper Will Hesmer, who missed the first six weeks of the season with an injured hamstring, recorded his first win since shutting out Kansas City in June 2006.

Neither side got a shot off until the 20th minute, when the Crew’s Danny O’Rourke sent the ball well wide of the right goalpost. Sasha Victorine’s 23rd minute shot drew a diving save attempt from Crew goalkeeper Will Hesmer but passed just outside the goalpost.
