Bicyclist hits van

YOUNGSTOWN - Police said a man riding a bicycle along Mahoning Avenue was injured when he collided with a van at the intersection with Glenellen Avenue around 1:30 p.m. today.

The identity of the cyclist wasn't immediately available, but police said he appeared to be about 18 or 19 years old.

He suffered facial injuries in the collision and was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center by ambulance, police said.

The commerical van, owned by Schindler Elevator Corp. of Akron, was pulling from Glenellen to make a right turn onto Mahoning Avenue when the cyclist, riding east on the sidewalk along Mahoning, failed to stop for the crosswalk and hit the van, police said.

The impact left the front wheel of the bicycle severely bent.
