Work on Y-town mayor’s office nearly done

YOUNGSTOWN — With renovation work nearly complete, Mayor Jay Williams and his staff moved back to their office on city hall’s first floor.

The mayor and his three-member executive staff moved Monday from temporary quarters on the fourth floor, which was unoccupied space in the law department. The four had relocated to the law department Feb. 1.

The work is part of a project costing the city about $200,000 to renovate the mayor’s office and to improve the 93-year-old building’s lobby area.

The work at the mayor’s office included a new heating and air conditioning system as well as new ceilings, walls, doors, carpeting, window treatments, furniture, and plumbing and electrical improvements.

The mayor’s office hadn’t been renovated in about 40 years. The office had broken light fixtures, not enough electrical outlets and an outdated heating system, city officials have said.

The work in the city hall lobby as well as the mayor’s reception area should be done in about 30 days, said Jason Whitehead, the mayor’s chief of staff/secretary.

Some of the lobby work has begun. That work includes painting the walls and making tile and terrazzo improvements.
