Poland mayor quits

POLAND — Village Mayor Ruth Wilkes has resigned her position, effective Sunday and in the meantime, she'll continue to collect her mayor's pay.

Wilkes, mayor since 1990, announced her resignation at village council's regular meeting tonight. She has accepted a job as grants management director in Attorney General Marc Dann's office.

At a village council meeting earlier this month, Linda Srnec, clerk-treasurer asked Damian DeGenova, village solicitor, for an opinion regarding whether the village should continue to pay Wilkes because her house had sold.

DeGenova's written opinion delivered to Srnec and council members today read, "until such time as a determination of ineligibility is made by a proper authority (probate court, etc.) of the mayor actually acts on her reported intent to permanently move from the village, she is entitled to be paid as mayor."
