Teen killed in single-vehicle accident in Milton Township

Sunday, June 17, 2007

MILTON TOWNSHIP — A 19-year-old township man who drove home at around 3:15 a.m. from a bonfire died in a single-vehicle accident near his home early Sunday.

The Canfield post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said a resident of Oakwood Drive called police at around 6 a.m. Sunday when he spotted a vehicle and a body in his front yard.

Dead is Kelly E. Pennington, of 16572 Oakwood Drive. Troopers said his vehicle failed to negotiate a turn on Oakwood Drive just north of Northeast River Road, went off of the right side of the road, striking a mailbox and a culvert and going airborne before overturning a couple of times and ejecting Pennington.

Troopers said they didn’t have information on where the bonfire was held.

They placed the time of the crash at 3:15 a.m. because a witness told troopers later that he had followed Pennington part of the way home at about that time, and Pennington kept turing his car around and missing his road. The witness said he thought Pennington had made it home.

Troopers said Pennington was not wearing a seat beat. It is not known yet whether alcohol played a role in the crash.
