Hazardous waste collection scheduled


NEW CASTLE, Pa. — A household hazardous waste collection is planned for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 7 at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds.

Items that will be accepted include:

UAerosol cans.

UAutomotive fluids (motor oil, transmission fluid, antifreeze, kerosene, brake fluid).

UBatteries.

UChemistry sets.

UHousehold cleaners (ammonia, drainer openers, acid cleaners, oven cleaners).

UMercury thermometers.

UPaint products (latex, oil based, alkyd based, arts/crafts chemicals, rust preventives, creosote, water sealers, paint thinners, furniture strippers).

UPesticides/garden items (rodent killers, insecticides, weed killers, mothballs, fertilizer).

UPhotochemicals.

UPool chemicals.

Items not accepted are ammunition, appliances, drugs, compressed gas cylinders including propane tanks, radioactive materials/smoke detectors, explosives, flares, fluorescent tubes, leaking containers, industrial/commercial waste, bulk waste, medical waste and tires.

The fee is $2 per gallon and only cash will be accepted.

The cleanup is sponsored by the Southwestern Pennsylvania Household Hazardous Waste Task Force in cooperation with Lawrence County commissioners and the county recycling/solid waste department.
