Checkpoint nets 1 arrest

NORTH JACKSON — A sobriety checkpoint netted one arrest for operating a vehicle while impaired and 10 citations for seat-belt violations. The checkpoint was conducted by the Mahoning County OVI Task Force on state Route 45 from 9 p.m. Friday through midnight. Authorities saw 268 vehicles come through the checkpoint zone. Police from Jackson, Austintown, Boardman, Smith and Goshen townships, Canfield city, Lake Milton State Park and Youngstown State University participated.

2nd Doggie Daze Reunion

CANFIELD — Angels for Animals will hold its second annual Doggie Daze Reunion on July 1 at the shelter, 4750 state Route 1654. The Lariccia Animal Center at Angels will be open from noon to 4 p.m. Everyone with an Angels dog will receive a gift bag full of goodies. There will be activities, photos, snacks and raffles. Since 1993, the organization has adopted out more than 7,000 dogs. Additionally, more than 10,000 dogs were spayed or neutered through Angels’ programs. Man dies in I-80 crash

WEST MIDDLESEX — A 66-year-old Mercer man was killed when his vehicle traveled off the side of Interstate 80 and struck an embankment. J. Bradley McGonigle III, Mercer county coroner, has ruled Howard E. Michaels’ death, which occurred Friday morning, accidental. The coroner’s office said Michaels was not wearing a seat belt. Pennsylvania State Police investigated the accident.

What to do with school

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — The New Castle Area School Board scheduled a special meeting for 4 p.m. Tuesday to discuss the fate of the Ben Franklin Junior High School building, now vacant. School officials have discussed several options since closing the school two years ago and combining the senior and junior high schools into one new facility. The possibilities for the Ben Franklin site include selling it, razing the building or consolidating the elementary classes there. The meeting will be held in the board room of the Croton Administration Building at 420 Fern St.

Urban League banquet

NILES — The Greater Warren-Youngstown Urban League will have its annual banquet at 6 p.m. Aug. 25 at McMenamy’s Banquet Center, 325 Youngstown-Warren Road. Calling all riders

YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning County Salvation Army is seeking riders for its second annual Motorcycle Run on July 7. Registration will take place at 11 a.m., and the run will begin at 1 p.m. at Harley Davidson, Bike Town Road in Austintown next to Quaker Steak and Lube. It will end at the Salvation Army, 1501 Glenwood Ave. The run will feature food, prizes, T-shirts, a silent auction and a live band. The cost is $10 for one rider and $5 for the second rider. All riders are welcome. Proceeds will benefit the Mahoning County Salvation Army’s programs, which provide food, clothing, shelter and social services to area residents.
