School gets exemption
COLUMBUS — The Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will not have to make up five days students missed because of a May 4 fire.
State Sen. John Boccieri of New Middletown, D-33rd, said language that absolved the school from the makeup days was in the two-year state budget that passed the Ohio Senate on Wednesday.
Without the language, the school was in danger of losing all its state funding if it didn't make up the days, Boccieri said.
Death ruled homicide
WARREN — The Trumbull County coroner’s office has ruled the death of 30-year-old Andrea Reynolds a homicide. The coroner’s ruling says Reynolds died of multiple stab wounds, the same cause of death as her uncle, John L. Freeman Jr., 50.
They were found Monday night in their home at 2631 Front St. on the city’s Southwest Side. Police Capt. Tim Roberts said Friday no arrests have been made.
A friend checking on Freeman and Reynolds spotted their bodies as he looked through a window. He then notified police.

AUSTINTOWN — Water customers on Norquest Boulevard and one customer on North Kimberly Avenue no longer have to boil their water for drinking or cooking. On Norquest, affected addresses were 5305, 5315, 5325, 5339, 5355, 5433, 5304, 5314, 5330, 5338, 5350, 5420 and 5430. On Kimberly, 148 was affected. Road work on state Route 46 resulted in the relocation of a waterline, which is why boiling water after service was restored was recommended by the Youngstown Water Department. The department tested the water, and it’s safe.
Motorcycle chase
AUSTINTOWN — Police arrested a man after chasing his motorcycle from Mahoning Avenue to an apartment complex near South Raccoon Road.
Dajwan T. Stubbs, 24, of Austintown is charged with failure to comply with the order of a police officer and with traffic violations, reports indicate, after the pursuit at 3 a.m. Friday. He is charged with speeding and no motorcycle endorsement on his license.
Stubbs is to appear in Mahoning County Court in Austintown at 6 p.m. Monday for arraignment. A police report says that after he went into the apartment complex’s private drive, he lost control of the motorcycle, went over a curb and was ejected. He was not injured.
Telephone wire theft
YOUNGSTOWN — Police charged a 48-year-old man with theft and disruption of a public service after they say he stole telephone wires off a pole on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Police say they saw Kenneth Winphrie of Thornton Avenue loading telephone wire into the back of a pickup truck about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday. Dana Lantz, an assistant city prosecutor, said the incident caused the entire North Side to lose telephone service for a day.
Police also charged Winphrie with possession of drug paraphernalia, saying he had a crack cocaine pipe in his shirt pocket. Judge Robert Milich of Youngstown Municipal Court arraigned Winphrie on Friday and ordered him to be held in the Mahoning County Jail on $125,000 bond pending a June 25 preliminary hearing.
