Boardman man charged in theft of food, assault

Saturday, June 16, 2007

The 27-year-old was charged with assault on a police officer and several other offenses.

BOARDMAN — As the saying goes, there’s no such thing as a free lunch, and that was a hard lesson to learn for a Brookfield Avenue man.

Police were called about 10 a.m. Thursday to Boardman Sparkle, Market Street, where a store employee said a man took a bottle of vodka and a frozen dinner from the store without paying.

The man then fled the store across Market Street and onto Ewing Road, the employee said.

Police arrived and viewed the security tape showing the theft. An officer recognized the man in the video from a previous incident as Ryan Carter, 27.

Police went to Carter’s Brookfield Avenue home but couldn’t get him to come to the door, a police report said. They found an empty frozen food container and a bottle cap behind the house. The back door was open.

Police entered the home and found Carter hiding in the basement. He struggled as police handcuffed him. An empty vodka bottle was found on the floor near where he had been sitting, police said. They arrested Carter, placing him into a cruiser.

Struggle

He hit his head on the window of the cruiser and started kicking the window. The officer pulled over and he and two others used restraints on Carter’s legs and returned him to the cruiser.

Carter was able to pull out of the restraints and started hitting his head and kicking the inside of the cruiser again, according to reports. The officer pulled over and tried to re-secure Carter, who kicked the officer in the chest and stomach.

Another officer used pepper spray to subdue Carter, who was then taken to the Mahoning County Justice Center. He is charged with assault on a police officer, vandalism, theft, resisting arrest and obstructing official business.

A preliminary hearing is set for Tuesday.
