NEW CASTLE, Pa. — City police charged two women with prostitution in the city’s second undercover sting. Both women were arrested in the parking lot of Beer For Less near the Cascade Galleria off the Columbus Inner Belt early Tuesday. Police said the women were arrested separately, but both, when approached by a uniformed officer, tried to claim a friend was picking them up. The man in the car, however, was an undercover police officer. One of the women arrested, Kellie Ann Mars, 21, of New Wilmington, was also arrested two weeks ago in a separate undercover string that netted six women charged with prostitution on the city’s south side. In addition to Mars, Laina Winters, 41, of West Washington Street, New Castle, was also charged with prostitution. She was remanded to the Lawrence County Jail after police found there were three arrest warrants for her from Butler County. Police did not say why she was wanted in Butler County.

Rolling Cash 5 winner

YOUNGSTOWN — A North Lima resident said he will get a head start paying off his bills after winning half of a $442,000 Rolling Cash 5 jackpot. Todd D. Newland bought his winning ticket at a GetGo gas station on 480 Boardman-Canfield Road on June 9. Newland used auto lotto to select the winning numbers 1-7-8-18-23. After taxes, he will collect $152,490. The second winning ticket was bought at a Cincinnati Mini Mart.

Beaver road bids due

NORTH LIMA — Beaver Township trustees have agreed to advertise for bids for road work this summer. Bids for tarring, chipping and blacktop are to be turned in to the township administration office by noon July 10. Trustees intend to open the bids at 6 p.m., before the regular monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. July 10. The trustees accepted the resignations of two police officers. Reserve officer George E. Anderson resigned, effective May 31, to accept a full-time position with the Youngstown Police Department. Part-time officer Michael A. Goterba resigned, effective May 24, for personal reasons. Trustees agreed to ask the Mahoning County auditor’s office to certify the total current tax valuation of the township for the upcoming renewal of the 1.5-mill fire and EMS levy to be placed on the ballot in November. They announced paramedic/firefighter Chad Manchester has left his post with the township to accept an appointment with the Youngstown Fire Department.

Man killed in car accident

AUSTINTOWN — Mark Tekach, 38, of Sprucewood Avenue, died around 7:50 p.m. Tuesday in a traffic accident, said police Lt. Bryan Kloss. Tekach had pulled out of the Plaza West parking lot at Raccoon and New roads. His car left the road and hit a car in a nearby yard, Kloss said.

Basketball hoop removed

YOUNGSTOWN — A portable basketball hoop positioned on the grass devil strip in the 1200 block of Kensington Avenue was taken by police just before 4 a.m. Wednesday and a 15-year-old boy who claimed ownership of the hoop was cited for curfew violation and basketball equipment on streets. The boy, who lives on Kensington, told police that the hoop could stay because it was on the grass. He was released to adults at his residence. The hoop was taken to the police garage.

New recycling site

MERCER, Pa. — A Hadley recycling dropoff point that has been closed for several months is expected to reopen today. Mercer County Recycling Coordinator Jill Boozer said two recycling bins that have been removed from a West Middlesex recycling site are being installed at the Perry Township Municipal Building, 1096 Fredonia Road. That site was recently closed because of a lack of bins. But now bins have become available as a result of the County Solid Waste Authority’s recent closing of the West Middlesex recycling site because of the large amount of trash being dumped there. Boozer said she hopes the Hadley site will absorb some of the recyclables currently being taken to the recycling depot at Wal-Mart in Hampfield Township.

State grant hearing

WARREN — The final public hearing on a state grant being sought for improvements to the Bolindale neighborhood in Howland Township will be at 7 p.m. June 26 at Trumbull Business College, 3200 Ridge Road. The project is being undertaken by the township and county planning commission and involves a $300,000 grant that would help with storm drainage improvements, street improvements, code enforcement, demolitions, park improvements and housing repair. An additional $280,000 would be available to the township and county from other state grants.
