Man calls from Italy to claim rings left at airport

ERIE, Pa. (AP) — A man called from Italy to claim the wedding bands and diamond engagement ring that were found at Erie International Airport last week.

The Erie man told police he realized he’d lost the rings during a flight from Amsterdam to Venice and thought they had been stolen and were lost for good, said David Bagnoni, the airport’s public-safety director.

He apparently learned they were found by reading a news story about their discovery by a worker Friday. The man had planned to surprise his girlfriend by proposing to her when she arrived later, Bagnoni said.

The surprise part is off. The woman was still in Erie and has been in touch with airport officials to claim the rings.
