Softball team inks
versatile Vanyi

YOUNGSTOWN — Rochelle Vanyi (Rocklin, Calif.) signed a national letter of intent to continue her education and softball career at Youngstown State, head coach Christy Cameron announced.

A four-year letterwinner at Rocklin High School, Vanyi helped her prep squad to a 21-8 record this spring and batted .325 with four doubles, four triples, a home run and 25 runs batted in. She also stole 17 bases in 17 attempts.

Vanyi also played a variety of positions at Rocklin, including first base, shortstop, third base and outfield.

"Rochelle is quality player," Cameron said. "She can fill gaps just about anywhere on the field whether in the infield or the outfield, she's just that versatile a player."

Vanyi joins Kim Klonowski (Plymouth, Mich.) and Katy Potokar (Grove City, Ohio) in the 2008 softball recruiting class.

Fundamental cage camp set June 18-21

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown State women's basketball coach Tisha Hill announced spots are still available for the Girls' Fundamental Camp, June 18-21, at the Beeghly Center.

The camp runs from 12:30-4 p.m. each day. Fundamental Camp is designed to reinforce fundamental skills and rules of the game to young players. Camp will include basic skill stations, competitions and more. Fundamental Camp is recommended for girls in grades 5-12.

Kelly Cap qualifies
for women’s golf open

GLEN ELLYN, ILL. — Kelly Cap, a Boardman High graduate, shot 145 for 36 holes in a U.S. Open Regional qualifier Monday at The Village Links.

She qualified to play in the Women’s Open June 28-July 1 at Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club in Southern Pines, N.C.

Katie Rogner qualifies
for U.S. Public Links

HARTFORD — Recent Warren JFK graduate and Hartford resident Katie Rogner was one of five women to qualify for the 2007 United States Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship, which will be played at Kearney Hill Golf Links in Lexington, Ky., June 16-23.

Rogner shot an 81 at Turkeyfoot Lakes Golf Club in Akron on May 26 to earn her spot in the WAPL. A field of 156 women competed.

Three days of match play will begin today and the 36-hole final match between two players will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday.

At JFK, Rogner was an honors student, a member of the National Honor Society and golf team captain. She played four years of varsity golf and basketball, placed fourth in the 2006 OSHAA golf championships, fourth in the 2006 Ohio Junior Girls golf championships, was selected first-team All-Ohio and first-team All-NEO. signed to play golf at YSU, where she’ll study engineering.

Pavlik and Loew to
play in charity event

YOUNGSTOWN — On Monday Kelly Pavlik, Youngstown’s own number one ranked middleweight boxer, and his trainer and co-manager Jack Loew will play in the ninth annual “JCC Suzi Solomon Golf and Tennis Classic” at Avalon Country Club and Squaw Creek Golf Course.

The event kicks off with a shotgun tee at 1 p.m. and tennis begins at 3 p.m. Dinner will begin at 6 p.m.

Bethany College picks
new volleyball coach

BETHANY, W.Va. — Bethany College named Courtney Kline women’s volleyball coach.

Kline will be taking over for Jan Forsty, who remains with the school as the associate athletic director and head softball coach. In her 12 years at the helm of the program, Forsty guided Bethany to 120 victories.

Kline was coach at Penn State-Fayette for two seasons, guiding her teams to league championships both seasons.

Jewish center starts
new boxing training

YOUNGSTOWN — The Jewish Community Center announces a new program “Boxing Basic Training,” that teaches individuals of any age the beginning skills of boxing.

An extension of the J’s Personal Training program, participants of this class will receive private instruction from John Loew, J Fitness Instructor, on how to hit speed and punching bags, proper body and feet positioning for balance and tips for developing strength and endurance.
