Candidacy in jeopardy

LISBON — The candidacy of two independent candidates in Columbiana County is in jeopardy because they voted as Democrats in the May primary. Lois Gall, director of the county board of elections, said Tuesday that the two had filed as independents. They are Ginny Hanlon, who filed to run for mayor of East Liverpool, and Donald Brown, who is running for mayor of Wellsville. The other seven candidates who filed to run as independents did not vote in the primary. Independents filed the day before the primary. Under a directive from the Ohio secretary of state’s office, people can’t run as independents if they cast a partisan vote in May. Candidates also could be barred if they held office in a political committee. Gall said she did not think any of the candidates were members of committees. Gall said she expected that the elections board would discuss the matter when it meets at 2 p.m. July 5.

Alleged assault with van

CAMPBELL — The city’s streets were the scene of an alleged attempted vehicular assault, when witnesses reported a “van was trying to run people over” early Tuesday. Police responded to find a van “full of women” at Jackson and Delmar streets, according to police reports. The women reported a domestic confrontation involving the father of a female passenger’s child. Two women standing in the street told police that the van’s driver had attempted to run them over, reports said. The victims and the man who is said to have been involved in a fight with the van’s occupants were advised to meet with the city’s law director if they wished to pursue charges, police said.
