Clayton receives
baseball honor

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown State redshirt freshman Tom Clayton earned honorable mention on the inaugural All-Ping! Freshman Team, the Ping!Baseball website announced on Monday.

Clayton, a Poland High School graduate, was previously named to the Horizon League All-Newcomer baseball team after being one of only two freshman to hit over .300 in the league.

Clayton finished the season batting .308 with a school freshman-record 20 doubles. He had 35 RBIs and 31 runs scored.

He also homered four times, including twice in the final five games.

In addition, Clayton hit .350 with a home run, seven RBIs and seven runs scored to lead the Penguins to two wins in the Horizon League tournament.

Clayton's 0.38 doubles per game also ranked 55th in the country as of June 5.

Father’s Day special
at Thunder game

BOARDMAN — The Mahoning Valley Thunder have a special Fathers Appreciation Night ticket package for Saturday as they play host to the Quad City Steamwheelers on Cortland Banks Field at the Chevrolet Centre.

Kickoff is slated for 7:05 p.m.

In honor of Father’s Day weekend, the Thunder has put together a ticket package that is sure to make dad feel good.

The package includes: four Bronze Level tickets, a T-shirt for dad, one hour of shooting pool and a free appetizer from Jillian’s and four free games of bowling at Camelot Lanes.

Penwell finishes what
he starts, now 3-0

NEW MIDDLETOWN — Glen Penwell tossed a complete game win to improve his season record to 3-0 as the Springfield baseball Old-timers defeated the Salem Old-timers 7-1 Sunday.

Penwell scattered five hits and yielded no earned runs for the victory.

Bill Feigert tripled for Springfield and had three RBIs.

Adrian D'Amato, Pat Pruett and Skip Feigert had key hits for the winners.

Police Athletic League
has strongman event

CAMPBELL — On June 2nd at the St. Joseph the Provider Festival, the CASTLO Police Athletic League, a non-profit youth fitness program founded by police officers from Campbell, Struthers, Lowellville, and Coitsville, hosted a bench press—strongman competition inside St. Joe's gym.

Campbell Firefighters Chuck Mrakovich and Frank Kotsel brought Campbell ladder engine #4 to the competition.

The competition drew over 50 lifters. The Struthers football team edged out Lowellville for the 30-yard fire truck pull.

Other bench press divisions and winners were (best lift weight in parenthesis): Teens 14-15 years, 125lbs, 1st place Andrew Rice (135). Teens 14-15 years, 126-150lbs, 1st place Nick Jacubec (170), 2nd Geno Tkach (145), and 3rd John Kostelnat (110). Cavaliers cancel
parties on plaza

CLEVELAND — The Cavaliers have announced that, due to the major staging areas required by trucks and national broadcast media limiting the space around the arena, plans to continue hosting Parties on the Plaza in Gateway Plaza for each Cavs home game during the NBA finals have been canceled. Fans will not be able to watch the broadcast of the game from Gateway Plaza outside Quicken Loans Arena.
