Small’s resignation has board seeking new Stambaugh director

YOUNGSTOWN — Operations at Stambaugh Auditorium will continue as usual as the search for a new director begins.

Steven Small, profiled in Sunday’s Vindicator, has actually resigned as director. His last day was May 25.

William Conti, president of Stambaugh’s board of directors, said there were a lot of calls among board members about Sunday’s story.

He said that a press release announcing Small’s departure was not sent out, even though one announcing his arrival had been.

Conti said the board was scheduled to address Small’s resignation at its meeting June 25.

Small’s resignation was “a family decision,” Conti said. “We were disappointed,” he added.

Conti said the 20-member board will begin a search for a new director.

“It has to be a person who has experience in the theater and who is knowledgeable about music,” he said.

Conti said though Small has left, projects he was working on will continue.

The Pittsburgh Symphony Chamber Orchestra will perform July 12. The special fundraiser will have 200 patrons dining on stage with the concert following. The Pittsburgh Symphony performs Sept. 27. “They’re world-class,” Conti said, “so it’s wonderful that they are performing here in Youngstown.” Sheila Firm, who has served as assistant director for seven years, will handle day-to-day duties along with the board, Conti said.
