Pittsburgh house fire kills five children

Tuesday, June 12, 2007

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Fire raced through a three-story row house early Tuesday, killing five children, and authorities said they were looking for a teenage baby sitter who was supposed to be watching them.

Flames were shooting from all three floors of the wood-frame building when firefighters arrived, officials said.

Sontaya Perry, 22, saw the smoke from her nearby home, ran outside and saw two boys on the street asking for help for their brothers and sisters, who were inside screaming. She said she tried to get in the house, but the wooden steps leading to the door were on fire.

“They were screaming and five minutes later they stopped screaming,” Perry said.
