Spay, neuter programs target pets of low-income owners

SALEM — The Humane Society of Columbiana County and Saving Shelter Pets Inc. will have a program to spay and neuter the pets of low-income owners.

The society also has declared June as “Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat Month.” At this time of year, animal shelters are overflowing with cats of all ages.

The surgeries will be done July 7-8 at the society, 2180 state Route 45.

Registration is required, and pet owners must show proof of income and a valid photo identification. An additional $7 will be charged for a rabies vaccination if the pet’s vaccination is not current.

The goal is to reduce births so there are fewer unwanted pets in need of rescue.

SSP has offered to donate at least $500 to help subsidize the spay/neuter costs for qualified residents during the program.

The humane society will match SSP’s $500 donation, and is challenging area residents and businesses to match SSP’s $500 donation. Matching funds should be marked “spay/neuter.”

Matching funds or donations may be made by sending a check or money order to HSCC, P.O. Box 101, Salem 44460. Donations may be left at Friends’ Roastery, 474 E. State St., Salem, or donated via PayPal at www.humanecc.org.
