Downtown building is in bad shape

Tuesday, July 24, 2007

YOUNGSTOWN — A downtown property redevelopment agency will consider a request next week to hire a firm to determine the cost of repairing the vacant and dilapidated Kress Building on West Federal Street.

The Youngstown Central Area Community Improvement Corp.’s property committee heard today from CIC staff members about the poor condition of the building’s interior.

The staff recently toured the CIC-owned building and discovered significant damage, including holes, to Kress’ roof, floors, ceilings and walls.

The property committee recommended the full CIC board consider hiring a structural engineer for no more than $10,000 to assess the structural soundness of the 87-year-old building and determine if it can be developed. The full board meets next Tuesday.
