N.J. man drowns
in Guilford Lake

GUILFORD LAKE — A 22-year-old New Jersey man drowned in Guilford Lake on Saturday evening, a Guilford Lake State Park officer reported.

Officer David Madison confirmed a body had been recovered about 11 p.m. Saturday in the lake. He said the victim was at the park attending a family event.

Officer Madison said the victim had been swimming with friends near a private dock on the lake and went missing about 9:30 p.m.

His identity has not been released, pending notification of his family.

Hanover Township Volunteer Fire Department, Ohio State Highway Patrol and state park officials assisted in the recovery.

Impaired driver arrested

CRAIG BEACH — Mahoning County Operating a Vehicle Impaired Task Force arrested one impaired driver at a sobriety checkpoint Saturday on Grandview Avenue.

The checkpoint, conducted from 8-11:30 p.m., was part of an enforcement program to stop impaired drivers in Mahoning County. Some 294 vehicles were stopped and checked. Six drivers were tested for impaired driving, and five were under the legal limit.

Airstream Club rally

CANFIELD — Members of the Mahoning Valley Ohio Unit of the International Airstream Club are preparing for a “Mystery Rally” from Thursday through Sunday. Members will be meeting at the Canfield Fairgrounds. The rally will be conducted by Bob and Eileen White of Youngstown and Don and Marilyn Marinelli of Canfield. National Night Out

NEW MIDDLETOWN — The village’s annual National Night Out and Community Day is set for Aug. 7. Police Chief William Morvay said the parade will line up at 6 p.m. at Springfield High School on state Route 170 and begin at 6:30. It will proceed to St. Paul the Apostle Church, also on state Route 170. A celebration will follow from 7-9:30 p.m. at Welker Park behind the village municipal building on state Route 170 with food, music, a cookout, K-9 demonstration and much more. Fireworks will follow at 10 p.m. at the high school. Donations are being accepted at the municipal building for the fireworks display. Morvay said anyone wanting to be in the parade should call the police department

Garage sale to be held

WARREN — The Upton Association will hold its annual garage sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Upton House, 380 Mahoning Avenue N.W. across the street from City Hall.

Items for sale can be dropped off from 1-5 p.m. Tuesday, 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday and 2-4 p.m. Thursday.
