Services for YSU provost

YOUNGSTOWN — Services for Dr. Robert K. Herbert, YSU provost and vice president for academic affairs, will be at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Luke Roman Catholic Church in Whitestone, Queens, New York. There will be a memorial service at YSU at a later date. The family requests that no flowers be sent. A memorial fund will be established in Herbert’s name; details will be determined after the family returns to Youngstown. Herbert drowned Friday while swimming with family members in the Pacific Ocean while on vacation in Costa Rica.

Petitions certified

YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning County Board of Elections certified the petitions Tuesday of all candidates who recently filed to run in the Sept. 25 nonpartisan primary runoffs for elected positions in Campbell and Sebring.

Mount Carmel Festival

GIRARD — The annual Mount Carmel Festival sponsored by the Italian Fraternal Home, 33 W. Wilson Ave., will be Thursday to Monday.

Events culminate Monday with the annual celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel with fireworks under the Girard viaduct at 11 p.m. A parade to honor Our Lady of Mount Carmel will be held starting at 10:30 a.m. Monday from the fraternal home to St. Rose Church, where a Mass will be at 11 a.m.

Concession stands and games for children will be held nightly at the festival from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. The festival also features music by area bands each day.

Meeting canceled

LEETONIA — The village has canceled its water and sewer committee meeting set for 6:30 p.m. today.
