Poland man injured in Austintown traffic accident

Wednesday, July 11, 2007

AUSTINTOWN — A man was injured in a one-car crash on South Meridian Road near Ferdinand Road. The accident happened about 6 p.m. this evening.

James Wells, 59, of Poland was driving on the wrong side of the road on Meridian, then swerved across the right lane of traffic and sheared a telephone pole in half, said Lt. Ron Deamicis.

Deamicis said the ambulance crew believed Wells was driving erratically because of problems stemming from a medical condition. He was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center with facial injuries.

The hospital said Wells was still in the emergency room late this evening.

The accident knocked down three transformers, and power was out at several businesses along Meridian.

Police also had the road blocked until downed power lines could be removed.
