Police make 3 arrests in drug-related case
YOUNGSTOWN — Police officers who said they witnessed an apparent drug transaction in the 100 block of Ayers Street arrested three Mercer County, Pa., residents on drug-related charges. Police said they stopped the car in which the three were riding after it ran a stop sign as it pulled away from the site of the suspected drug sale just after noon Saturday. Police said they found drug paraphernalia beneath the seat where the driver, Rodney McClimans, 26, of Wise Road, Jamestown, was sitting and some suspected heroin and various drug paraphernalia in the purse of the vehicle’s owner, Amy L. Sewinsky, 36, of Salem Street, Greenville. They said they also found some drug paraphernalia in the back seat where Chad Miklo, 25, of Third Avenue, Sharon, was sitting. All three were charged with possession of drug instruments, and Sewinsky was also charged with possession of heroin. All three were lodged in Mahoning County Jail pending arraignment today in municipal court.
Domestic violence
YOUNGSTOWN — Police arrested Franklin D. Barron Jr., 49, of Philadelphia Avenue, on a charge of domestic violence after he was accused of throwing his pregnant girlfriend out of the house and punching her. Police said the victim told them that Barron struck her in the face with a closed fist and threw her down on the concrete, injuring her left hand, around 2 p.m. Saturday. Police arrested him at the scene without incident and he remained in Mahoning County Jail on Sunday awaiting arraignment in municipal court today.
Apartments catch fire
LIBERTY — Firefighters were called to a pair of apartment blazes started by cooking fires Sunday. The first was at 4 Trumbull Court around 1:15 p.m., where oil being heated to cook chicken caught fire and the flames spread to cabinetry and an exhaust fan. The tenant was able to put out the flames with some baking soda. Damage was estimated at $3,000. The second was at an apartment at 1465 Townsend Ave. around 4:20 p.m. and started when oil being heated for French fries caught fire and flames spread to cabinetry and an exhaust fan. Damage in that blaze was estimated at between $4,500 and $5,000. Apartment buildings were evacuated in both fires but there were no injuries, authorities said.
Board to mull plan for
Conneaut Lake Park
CONNEAUT LAKE, Pa. (AP) — Conneaut Lake Park has used its meager funds to keep its liability insurance in effect until today, when a new board will have to decide the future of the beleaguered park. The park, which has not had the cash to open since the start of the season, made a $7,000 payment to the insurance company on Friday. Keeping the full insurance policy required a $28,000 payment by midnight Sunday, but general manager George Deshner said those funds were not available.
Today, the park’s 15-member board of directors will consider a proposal set forth by two Conneaut Lake residents who headed a fundraiser that collected nearly $60,000.
The two, Dick Williams and Greg Sutterlin, said they will only release the money if it is used to open the park, cover the insurance, pay an $8,000 electric bill to restore power to park areas and restock the Beach Club.
