Accident in Youngstown kills two area motorcyclists

YOUNGSTOWN — City police are investigating a motorcycle accident that killed two area men Sunday and the racing activities that may have led to the accident.

Police Sgt. Gerard Slattery said two men were dead at the scene of the 5 p.m. double- motorcycle accident on Ohio Works Drive.

Police would not release the names of the victims, but did say both men were in their early 20s.

One man is from Canfield, and the other is believed to be from Youngstown, Slattery said.

According to police, the men appeared to have been racing along the Ohio Works Drive area, traveling at speeds greater than 90 mph, when the motorcycles clipped one another, ejecting both men from the motorcycles.

Both riders were wearing helmets.

Slattery said racing in the Ohio Works Drive area has been an ongoing problem for the last month. He said officers have received nightly calls about racing in that area, and had increased patrols issuing tickets for any violations in the area.
