Scrappers struggle as Batavia wins, 5-1

Mahoning Valley scored its lone run in the ninth inning.

BATAVIA, N.Y. — The Mahoning Valley Scrappers lost for the second straight night, managing just six hits in a 5-1 loss to the Batavia Muckdogs in New York-Penn League action Saturday.

Juan Valdes went 2-for-4 and scored the only run in the ninth inning for the Scrappers (6-6), who are two games behind Williamsport in the Pinckney Division standings.

Justin Jenkins singled and drove in a run, while Todd Martin, Matthew Brown and Mark Thompson also had hits in the los.

Thomas Pham went 3-for-4 with his first homer of the year, a solo shot to lead off the fourth for the Muckdogs. Pham also had two RBIs and scored a run for Batavia (5-7), which is in fifth place in the Pickney division, three games back.

Mahoning Valley’s Michael Eisenberg started and got the loss, giving up four runs (all earned) over five innings. He surrendered six hits and struck out three.

Clayton Mortensen (1-0) started for the Muckdogs and pitched five shutout innings to get the win, giving up just one hit with a walk and four strikeouts.

Joshua Dew pitched the final two-thirds of an inning, getting out of a bases-loaded jam to pick up his second save of the season.
