GOSHEN -- A one-car crash around 9:10 p.m. Monday on state Route 534 just south of Western Reserve Road resulted in the death of the passenger, Jacob M. Scott, 17, of Beloit, said the Ohio State Highway Patrol Canfield Post. The 1993 Ford Tempo driven by Zachary M. Dalton, 18, of Sebring, was southbound on 534 when he lost control and went off the right side of the road and struck a utility pole, the patrol said Tuesday. Dalton was taken to Akron City Hospital in serious condition. Scott was pronounced dead at Salem Community Hospital.
Crews battle fire in Liberty
LIBERTY -- A house at 1005 E. Park Circle caught fire at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.
A dispatcher in Liberty could provide no further details at presstime.
Volunteers sought
YOUNGSTOWN -- Community Legal Aid Services Inc. of Youngstown is seeking volunteers for its Volunteer Advocacy Legal Unit Program. Volunteers assist victims of domestic violence with the process of obtaining a civil protection order. Volunteers must complete certification training and be available twice a month from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Those interested should contact the VALU office at (330) 742-5857.
Two win bicycles
WARREN -- The Greater Warren-Youngstown Urban League gave away two bicycles Monday as it wrapped up its Christmas gift raffle for older children. Teresa Hosey, program assistant/shelter manager who coordinated the league's holiday giveaway, said the organization worked to find gifts for older children and involved about 20 of them -- ages 12 to 16 -- in the bike drawing. The winners are Lucinda Franklin, 12, and Clayton Waite, 15, both of Warren. The girl's bike was donated by Thomas S. Conley, league president and CEO, and the boy's bike by Super Kmart employees.

Bomb threat called in
AUSTINTOWN -- Fitch High School was evacuated early Tuesday afternoon after a bomb threat was called in to 911, township police reported.
The caller contacted the Youngstown Police Department operator at 11:52 a.m. He said a bomb was set to go off a half-hour later.
Austintown Lt. Bryan Kloss said nothing was found in the school, and students and staff were allowed to go back in.
The caller called Youngstown again at 12:27 p.m. He was irate because he didn't think authorities took him seriously, Kloss said. Police are investigating.
Probation for theft
HUBBARD -- Mechele Cromartie, 38, was placed on two years' probation for theft by deception and criminal conspiracy/theft by deception, both misdemeanors, when he appeared recently in Mercer County (Pa.) Common Pleas Court. Records state that Cromartie, whose address is listed as a post office box here, conspired with two people in June and July 2004 and used a credit card issued to a construction company without the company's authorization. It was used to buy 1,000 worth of gift cards and miscellaneous merchandise at Lowe's Home Improvement, 3000 Glimcher Blvd., Hermitage.
Sentenced to jail
MERCER, Pa. -- Judge Thomas Dobson of Mercer County Common Pleas Court sentenced Scott Shultz, 40, of Lincoln Avenue, Hubbard, to three to 18 months in jail, with house arrest allowed for a part of the time. Shultz was sentenced Tuesday for felony attempt to commit criminal trespass and misdemeanor attempt to commit theft by unlawful taking. Court documents state that on Aug. 8, 2005, he tried to open a locked door with a butter knife at the Dollar General Store on Pa. Route 58, Coolspring Township.
