City to raze blighted Fifth Avenue houses downtown
YOUNGSTOWN — Three dilapidated houses on the southern end of Fifth Avenue, one of the city’s major gateways connecting downtown to Youngstown State University, are slated to be demolished in February.
The city board of control is to consider legislation Thursday to approve paying $20,250 to the Howland Co. for asbestos abatement at two of the structures, 214 and 216 Fifth Ave., just north of the Mahoning County jail.
There also is asbestos at 220 Fifth Ave., said city demolition director Michael Damiano, but not as much as the two other buildings. It should cost about $4,000 to $5,000 to remove asbestos from 220 Fifth Ave., Damiano said.
A request to pay for that abatement should be in front of the board of control in February, Damiano said.
The houses at 214 and 216 houses have been vacant for about four years, and the house at 220 was last occupied more than two years ago.
