YOUNGSTOWN -- A small fire that started near an elevator control room at 20 Federal Place around 9:10 a.m. Monday set off the sprinklers and did about 500 damage, officials said. The building is owned by the city of Youngstown.
Traffic stop yields drugs
AUSTINTOWN -- A 16-year-old boy was caught with 11 plastic bags of marijuana during a traffic stop on Mahoning Avenue, township police said.
The boy was stopped at 3:15 p.m. Friday because of traffic violations, police said. The driver and a passenger, also 16, were released to their mothers pending charges, the report said.
Free dental care
YOUNGSTOWN -- City school pupils from Hayes Middle School, Williamson Elementary and the Head Start program will get free dental care this week at Choffin Career and Technical Center. Friday is National Give Kids a Smile Day, and area dentists, dental hygienists and 20 dental students enrolled in Choffin's School of Accredited Dental Assisting are offering free services to children from the selected schools all this week. Free exams, cleanings, X-rays, fluoride treatments, sealants and fillings will be provided. As many as 300 children will be served during the week.
Chairman re-elected
CORTLAND -- Scott Daffron has been re-elected chairman of the city's planning, zoning and building commission. Charles Peck was re-elected vice chairman and Dianna Daniels, secretary. The commission meets the second Monday of the month at 7 p.m. at the city administration building. If there are questions, contact Daniels, (330) 637-3011.
Carjacking reported
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 21-year-old Campbell man told police that his car was taken at gunpoint after he gave a man and two women he didn't know a ride from 12th Street in Campbell to Orrin Street in Youngstown around 12:45 a.m. Monday.
Girl Scout Fair planned
HOWLAND -- Troop 607 of the Girl Scouts of Lake to River Council is sponsoring a Girl Scout Fair from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Howland Community Church, 198 Niles-Cortland Road S.E.
Anyone attending will have the opportunity to meet Girl Scouts, leaders and parents from their area, as well as participate in several activities.
No injuries in house fire
WARREN -- A Monday afternoon fire caused 5,000 damage at 619 Fairfield St. N.E. There were no injuries at the home, which is occupied by Freddie L. Washington. The cause of the fire has not been determined. There was 3,000 damage to the structure and 2,000 to the contents.
School boards to meet
BOARDMAN -- Richard Lewis, newly appointed executive director of the Ohio School Boards Association, will deliver the keynote address at a four-county "All School Boards" regional meeting Wednesday at Mr. Anthony's Banquet Center on South Avenue Extension. More than 170 school board members from Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Ashtabula counties are scheduled to attend the program, which begins with a dinner at 6 p.m.
Fire destroys home
CAMPBELL -- No injuries were caused by a fire that destroyed a home at 40 10th St. on Monday morning. The owner, Debra Murphy, is being assisted with food, clothing and shelter by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross.
Fire Chief Nick Hrelec said the two-story brick structure, formerly a bar, was a total loss. He said the fire was caused by an electrical short in the wall. A damage estimate is pending. Campbell firemen were assisted by Struthers and Coitsville Township firefighters.
