YOUNGSTOWN -- A 16-year-old boy driving with an expired temporary permit and traveling with a loaded gun was arrested during a traffic stop, police said. Miles Clinkscale, of East Aurburndale Avenue, was first seen speeding on East Ravenwood Avenue and failed to stop for a stop sign, police said. He was pursued to the driveway of his home around 7 p.m. Wednesday. Police said they smelled marijuana emanating from the car's interior and found a cigar refilled with suspected marijuana in the center console and found the gun under the driver's seat. Two passengers were released at the scene and Clinkscale was taken to the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center to face charges of carrying a concealed weapon, possession of marijuana and traffic violations.
Grand jury gets case
WARREN -- The case of a man police say took 65,290 worth of watches in the break-in of a downtown jewelry store has been bound over to the Trumbull County grand jury. Antonio Hawthorne, 37, of Bennington Avenue, Youngstown, waived his preliminary hearing Thursday before municipal Judge Thomas Gysegem. Police reported that Hawthorne broke the front door window to gain entry into Thom Duma Fine Jewelry, 115 W. Market St., and stole 28 watches. He was captured a short time later. He remains in the county jail in lieu of 100,000 bond.
Deal ends custody case
LISBON -- A plea agreement ended a case against a man who twice took his own children in violation of a custody agreement. Joseph Moore, 36, of Lisbon, was found guilty of two misdemeanor counts of interfering with custody Wednesday by Judge C. Ashley Pike of Columbiana County Common Pleas Court. Moore had been charged with the same counts as felonies, but a jury deadlocked in the case in 2006. As a result of the plea agreement, he was given a 165-day sentence in the county jail, which equaled the time he has already served. Last year, Moore took his children, now ages 6 and 4, to Washington, D.C., during a dispute with his ex-wife. His supporters picketed outside the county courthouse. A jury last year found him guilty of two misdemeanor counts of interfering with custody from an incident in 2004 when he took his children to Florida after a dispute with his ex-wife. On Nov. 9, 2006, he was sentenced to 201 days at the county jail.
Six new U.S. citizens
YOUNGSTOWN -- Six new U.S. citizens were sworn in Thursday by Judge Maureen A. Cronin of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. Their names, hometowns and countries of origin are: Bushra Shaheen, Canfield, Pakistan; Maher Abdullah Shalash, Boardman, Syria; Michael Badih Khoury, Struthers, Lebanon; Jagjit Kaur, Canfield, India; Tammy Thi Bach Nguyen, Boardman, Vietnam; Mara Solic, Austintown, Croatia.
Fireworks Capital
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- After nearly two years of research plus an extensive application process, the Lawrence County Tourist Promotion Agency recently received notification from the U.S. Trademark Office that the county agency has obtained the Fireworks Capital of America trademark. In addition, the agency purchased the FireworksCapitalofAmerica.com domain name. "The opportunity to secure the Fireworks Capital of America designation safeguards the brand for the community," said Rob Del Signore, president of the agency's board of directors. Plans for the brand involve greater exposure on the Internet, including the creation of an online store.
Several charges
WARREN -- Littering by a 28-year-old Warren woman has resulted in more serious charges, police reported. Rebecca Miller, of Woodbine Avenue Southeast, faces charges of operating a vehicle under the influence, child endangering and littering. Police reported that they spotted Miller throw litter out of her car on Youngstown-Road about 12:30 a.m. Thursday. After a blood-alcohol test showed she was over the legal limit, she was charged with child endangering because her 4-year-old daughter was in the vehicle.
