Elderly couple dead in Sharon crash

Friday, January 26, 2007

SHARON, Pa. — Icy road conditions may have contributed to a crash that killed an elderly Sharpsville couple.

Sharon Police Chief Mike Menster said Charles Means, 79, and his wife, Margaret, also 79, both of Lamor Road were pronounced dead at the crash which occurred at 1:08 p.m. Friday on U.S. Route 62 just west of the Oakland Avenue Viaduct.

Menster said it was snowing when Means crossed from the westbound lane into the eastbound lane and crashed into a vehicle driven by David Weatherholt, 28, of Sherman Avenue, Sharon. Weatherholt and his passenger, Kim Weaver, 21, of Mercer, Pa., were taken by ambulance to UPMC Horizon in Farrell. A nursing supervisor at the hospital said they were not listed as inpatients on Friday evening.

Sharon firefighters had to extricate all four from the vehicles, Menster said. An accident reconstructionist from the Hermitage Police Department is assisting Sharon in its investigation, the chief said. The eastbound lanes of Route 62 were closed to traffic for about 45 minutes after the crash.
