Mother charged with child endangering in baby's death
YOUNGSTOWN — The 21-year-old mother whose infant daughter died after being removed from life-support appeared via video for arraignment today in municipal court on a felony charge of child endangering.
Judge Elizabeth A. Kobly set a $25,000 signature bond for Shareitta Buffingtonmug of Almyra Avenue and ordered that she be placed on electronically monitored house arrest. Buffington will be back in court 11 a.m. Feb. 2 for a preliminary hearing.
The warrant was issued Monday before the death of 7 1/2-month-old Kha-Niyah Williams. The baby died that evening at Akron Children’s Hospital after spending the weekend on life support.
Buffington is accused of leaving Kha-Niyah unattended in a water-filled bath tub Friday evening. Kha-Niyah was face down in the tub when Buffington, who told police she’d left to fetch soap, returned.
Buffington was captured Tuesday evening in Akron by members of the Mahoning Valley Violent Crimes Task Force and Akron FBI agents.
