Baby left unattendedin tub dies, police say
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 71/2-month-old Youngstown girl who was left unattended in a bathtub Friday night has died, city police confirmed late Monday.
Kha-Niyah Williams had been flown by helicopter to Akron Children's Hospital and had been listed in critical condition there, and died Monday, said Capt. Mike Vodilko.
The child's mother, Shareitta Buffington, 21, has told police she left the baby in the tub with a 2-year-old and went to get baby soap in a bedroom.
When she returned, the baby was face-down in the water, a police report says.
The Mahoning County prosecutor's office filed a felony charge of endangering children against the child's mother.
Police said Monday evening that she has not been arrested.
Police also said there was no additional charge filed against her at that time.
High school locked downafter bullets are found
GIRARD -- Girard High School was locked down Monday afternoon when two bullets were found in a restroom.
Police Chief Frank Bigowsky said the .22-caliber rounds were found in a restroom. The school was locked down as police searched some lockers.
No gun was found.
"We have a pretty good idea where the investigation is going," Bigowsky said when asked if police have suspects. He noted that students were released from classes on time.
Last week, 10 young people, including six students, were charged with drug offenses, accused of selling marijuana within 1,000 feet of school district property, making the charges felonies. Police had made marijuana buys from all 10, they said.
Armed robbery reported
STRUTHERS -- A male employee of Clemente Ambulance Service, Youngstown-Poland Road, was robbed at gunpoint at 5:48 a.m. Sunday in the parking lot of the business.
The 36-year-old Hubbard man told police the robber, described as a man in his mid-30s wearing blue jeans and a blue jean jacket, walked up behind him just after the victim got out of his car.
When the employee turned around, the robber pulled what appeared to be a firearm and said, "Give me what you got."
The victim gave his wallet to the robber, who fled on foot. Police unsuccessfully searched the area for about 30 minutes .
Weathersfield meeting
MINERAL RIDGE -- Weathersfield Township trustees will meet at 7 tonight in the township administration building, their first regular meeting for 2007.
Theft from Girl Scouts
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two city women are accused of stealing more than 1,500 from the Girl Scouts.
Karen Conklin, chief executive officer of the Girl Scouts of America, Lake to River Council, based in Niles, reported that the two women kept 1,512 they made from Girl Scout cookie sales, according to Youngstown police reports.
The women were identified by Conklin, but no arrests have yet been made in the thefts.
