Popovec leads Canfield to 11th



The Cardinals remained undefeated by rolling past Poland Saturday, 65-34.
CANFIELD -- Kate Popovec scored 21 points and grabbed 18 rebounds to lead Canfield High to a 65-34 win over Poland Saturday in a Metro Athletic Conference game, as the Cardinals' stretched their undefeated streak to 11 games.
Jill Halfhill chipped in with 12 points, Bryanne Halfhill 11 and Melissa West nine to support Canfield (11-0, 7-0 MAC).
Kellee Davis had 11 points to lead Poland.
Salem 39, East Liverpool 31
EAST LIVERPOOL -- Amy Scullion had 13 points and six rebounds to lead Salem to a MAC victory.
The Quakers (10-3, 6-2) led 27-7 at halftime.
Courtney Harrison had 10 points for East Liverpool, which committed 20 turnovers and was just 7-of-40 from the field.
Northwest 55, West Branch 32
CANAL FULTON -- The Warriors were outscored 28-8 in the middle two periods.
Amanda Stiffler led West Branch (8-5, 6-3 Northeastern Buckeye Conference) with nine points, while Larissa Hahn added five points and three rebounds.
Northwest (10-2, 7-1), which led 29-14 at halftime, held a 37-13 edge in rebounds. The Indians' Dakota Harkins scored 11 points.
Boys basketball
MASSILLON -- Michael Porrini scored 22 points to lead Massillon over Ursuline, 67-53.
Porrini also had eight rebounds for the Tigers (10-4), who led 29-16 at halftime.
Dorie Irvin added 17 points for Massillon, Jared Porrini had 16 and Justin Turner had 10.
Ursuline (9-2), playing without D'Aundray Brown, had four players in double figures: Nick McCartney with 13, Ryan Burton with 11 and Dale Peterman and Craig Caputo with 10 each.
Massillon Perry 73, Mooney 40
MASSILLON -- Greg Fite had 21 points, seven rebounds, five steals and five assists for Perry.
John Marshall also scored 10 points for Perry, which led 41-17 at halftime.
L.J. Sutton led Mooney with 14 points.
Warren Harding 47,Cle. St. Ignatius 46
CLEVELAND -- Keelyn Franklin sank a foul shot with one second remaining for the winning point.
Damian Eargle led the Raiders (9-3) with 12 points, while Franklin scored 10.
For St. Ignatius (4-8), Conor Sweeney and Matthew Rosinski scored 14 points each.
Wellsville 88, Beaver Local 42
WELLSVILLE -- Zane Carter had 15 points and 19 rebounds to lead Wellsville (11-2) in a non-conference game.
D.J. Douglas added 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Tigers, while Jeremy Carter had 19 points and Nick Cataldo 13.
Farrell 78, Kennedy Catholic 69
FARRELL -- Donald Jackson and Josh Williams each scored 22 points to help lead Farrell.
Marsell Holden led Kennedy Catholic (9-5) with 25 points while Phil Kaikis had 21.
Wrestling
HOWLAND -- Howland had four individual champions and 11 placers overall to win the 48th Howland Invitational.
The Tigers scored 208 points to outdistance runner-up Hickory (160.5) and Brookfield (160).
Brookfield had five champions and nine placers.
Howland's champions were Kyle Leek (119 pounds), Greg Ryan (130), Cody Leek (140) and Mike Kreatsoulas (189).
For Brookfield, Tristan Thompson (125), Brad Harnett (135), Mike Bender (152), Ross Tice (160) and Jeff Hanson (215) won titles.
Other champions were Salem's Patrick Simpson (103) and Greg Lambert (275), Hickory's Niko Boccuzzi (112), Nick Perrine (145) of Franklin (Pa.) and Tyler Rice (171) of Conneaut.
