Wilson High's history included bowling team

If you're into a little nostalgia, consider this excerpt from "A Bicentennial Salute to Woodrow Wilson High School," as the school's final months of existence approach:
"The bowling team's checkered career began in 1942 with a record of nine wins and twelve losses, finishing in fifth place. Bob McCall led the team with a 157 average. Jarrett Strickler's 1943 team won the Mahoning Valley High School Bowling League with Joe Stepien, leading the Big 20 with a 174 average. Inspired by Walter Tocicki and his 149 average, the '46 Presidents plowed their way to a first-place tie with East, only to lose in the playoffs, 2-1, but still taking the silver medal. The team placed second in the Mahoning County Scholastic League in both 1948 and 1949, sparked in both years by the agile Rick Rzasa."
McGaha fires 832
Willie McGaha's 235-298-299 -- 832 led G.E. Mixed at Wedgewood on Jan. 8.
Jennifer Gossett's 300 topped all games among Wedgewood Ladies Trio bowlers on Jan. 9, when Erin Fairchild's (782)-1,040 led both three- and four-game series.
Gossett finished with (739)-966, while Paula Pecorelli's (726)-983 was second-best overall.
Adam Barta's 804 bowled over the Spiech Classic gang at Bell-Wick on Jan. 15, when Francis Zitnik's 290 was the top game.
Matt Roscoe's 300-761 was tops among Wednesday Men at McKinley Lanes and Jim Diver rolled 300 in Window World/Casper Welding at Amron on Jan. 2.
Joe Baker's 299 was tops in Ron Haus Mix Matchers at Amron on Jan. 12.
Jim Tancabel had 288-822 in Wed. Men at Holiday on Jan. 3 and a 287 got Paul Givens started toward a 724 in Doughton Businessmen at Bell-Wick on Jan. 10. On Jan. 18, Mark Ferrara's 791 led Kelley-Robb Funeral Home Classic at Bell-Wick. Both Ferrara and Dick Soles had 298s.
Don Ford's second game of 279 included 11-in-a-row starting in the second frame in the Thursday Night Sportsman at Wedgewood.
Vince Viglio's 257-717 was top in Camelot Majors on Dec. 30.
Now it's clear why the UAW Gary's Tuesday Morning Trio at Wedgewood dropped the men's designation from the league name.
Look no farther than the 687 series rolled by Ali Wess to beat out Jim Wess' 676, Glen McClain's 656 and many others during a recent session.
Shirley Hood's 235-585 and Laurie Wolfe's 182-500 at Wedgewood were top scores to begin the Twilighters' second half on Jan. 3.
Ron Haus Auto was second-half champ in Ron Haus Auto Classic at Camelot with members Leggs Guerrieri, Joe Guerrieri, Mike Sharpe, Chuck Zarbaugh and John Protain.
Beckwith & amp; Daprile won Lucky Ladies' first half at Holiday.

HUBBARD -- The fifth annual 9-pin no-tap scotch doubles benefit tournament sponsored by the Youngstown USBC Women's Bowling Association will be Feb. 2-4 at Bell-Wick Bowl.
The categories are two women, two men, mixed pairs and adult/junior. Entry fee of 20 per doubles and forms -- available at area alleys -- should be sent to the YWBA, 2703 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown 44509. Pre-registration deadline is Jan. 31.
All bowlers will receive a "thank you" gift. A silent auction, raffle and door prizes will also be available. Proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society, Hospice of the Valley and the Jessica Moorhead Foundation.
The benefit's theme is "come knock down pins to help strike out cancer."
