Rayen holds off Chaney rally, 64-63



Cardinal Mooney held off Wilson to post a 46-44 victory.
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Rayen High boys basketball team survived a last-second scare from host Chaney on Friday, defeating the Cowboys 64-63 in a Steel Valley Conference matchup.
With Rayen (4-9) up by three points, Chaney's Evan Busch was fouled with four seconds remaining. The senior missed the first free throw, but, instead of the Cowboys knocking it away from the basket and out into 3-point range, the ball was tipped in.
Roncarlos Hilton had 19 points for Rayen, while Tomaz Hilton added 18.
For Chaney (1-12), Taon Belcher had a season-high 22 points and the 6-4 senior forward also grabbed 12 rebounds.
Mooney 46, Wilson 44
YOUNGSTOWN -- A late fourth quarter rally Wilson (4-7, 0-2) fell just short in the SVC contest.
L.J. Sutton paced the Cardinals (2-9, 2-1) with 16 points. Tim Marlowe added 11.
William Johnson led the Redmen with 14 points and he grabbed five rebounds. Lamar McQueen, who had four assists and Raylin Poindexter each had six points for Wilson, which outscored Mooney 13-9 down the stretch.
Canfield 61, East Liverpool 31
EAST LIVERPOOL -- Joe Carbon had 21 points and eight rebounds to lead Canfield, which took a 33-16 halftime lead and cruised the rest of the way.
Mike Hoelzel had 15 points and Sean Baker had nine assists for the Cardinals (9-2, 6-1 Metro Athletic Conference), whose lone league loss came against Niles.
Joey Wines scored 15 points for the Potters (1-8, 1-6).
Poland 56, Salem 38
SALEM -- Chris Lovell and Lou Coppola each scored 14 points to lead Poland in a defense-heavy game.
Zack O'Brien scored 15 points for Salem, which was outscored 14-0 in the first quarter.
Campbell 48, Howland 30
CAMPBELL -- The Red Devils (8-2) improved to 5-1 in the MAC as Jermaine Richardson scored 18 points.
For the Tigers (3-9, 2-4), Jared Kill scored 11 points.
