YOUNGSTOWN -- Ursuline High School, 750 Wick Ave., will hold its annual open house from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Feb. 4. All academic departments and school organizations will have booths and displays and there will be performances by the Ursuline High School Band, cheerleaders and speech team members. Members of student council will conduct building tours and there will be a tuition raffle for eighth-graders who are accompanied by a parent or guardian. There will be a presentation on financial aid, and aid application forms will be available. Grants are awarded on an annual basis and not automatically renewed. Aid applications for the 2007-08 school year must be completed, notarized and returned to the high school before April 1.
Students' hosts needed
The Ohio 4-H International Program is looking for families to play host to more than 100 Japanese exchange students who will be arriving in the Buckeye State this summer. The students are between the ages of 12-18. They are insured and have their own spending money. Host families do not need to provide any extra travel or entertainment for their guests. They stay as a member of the host family for about three and a half weeks. Host families may be traditional, single-parent, dual-career, childless, rural, urban, etc. Hosts are responsible for students' lodging, meals and family activities. Poster contest for kids
COLUMBUS -- The Ohio AMBER Alert Steering Committee wants Ohio's fifth-graders to participate in a 2007 national poster contest sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice. This year's theme is "Bringing Our Missing Children Home." Fifth-graders are asked to develop artwork that will represent America's united goal to bring missing children home safely. More than 1.3 million children are reported missing each year and most are returned home safely. The contest is designed for children to have fun creating a poster while learning lessons about their safety. Ohio Amber Alert will pick one winner and two runners-up; their artwork will be displayed on the organization's Web site. The top poster will be entered in the national contest. Seniors hold blood drive
YOUNGSTOWN -- The seniors in Health Tech Prep and Diversified Health Occupations at Choffin Career and Technical Center held a blood drive this month, collecting 39 units of blood, exceeding their goal of 25 units. Students and faculty donated. In gratitude for the successful drive, the American Red Cross will give the school 500 in college scholarship funds to be divided among the two top senior students in both the Health Tech Prep and Diversified Health Occupations programs. Each of the four will receive 125 paid directly to the college or university of their choice for fall 2007.
Quiz-bowl matches set
BOARDMAN -- The community is invited to watch local school quiz bowl teams sponsored by the Mahoning County Educational Service Center compete in a "Spotlight" Match of the Week at Barnes & amp; Noble Booksellers, 381 Boardman-Poland Road. Each week will feature two area schools in a fast-paced academic competition. Questions will be read and points awarded to teams based on correct responses. The matches are Wednesdays at 4:30 p.m. The schedule is as follows: Wednesday: Columbiana vs. Mahoning County Career & amp; Technical Center; Jan. 31: Lowellville vs. Boardman; Feb. 7: Chaney vs. Jackson Milton; Feb. 14: Campbell Memorial vs. Western Reserve; and Feb. 21: Poland vs. Sebring. The league championship will be Feb. 28 at 4:30 p.m.
Scale model of mill
MONACA, Pa. -- Penn State Beaver freshmen from the "Introduction to Engineering Design and Graphics 100" class recently presented a 1/12th scale model of Gaston's Mill to the Columbiana County Forests and Parks Council in Ohio. The grain mill, built in 1837 and named for longtime owner and operator Philander Gaston, is being restored to its original state. It was in operation until World War I. Restoration is being done under the guidance of the Columbiana County Forests and Parks Council in accordance with an agreement with the Columbiana County Historical Association.
St. Charles open houses
BOARDMAN -- St. Charles School, 7325 Westview Drive, will hold open houses from 9-10:15 a.m. Thursday and 1:45-3 p.m. Jan. 28 in the school cafeteria. The programs will include an information session and a guided tour of the school.
