McDonough Museum hosts Scholastic art show



YOUNGSTOWN -- The 2007 Regional Scholastic Art Awards will be on exhibit today through Feb. 9 at the McDonough Museum of Art at Youngstown State University. This event is sponsored by the William Swanston Foundation.
The Northeastern Ohio Regional Scholastic Art Awards program is part of the national exhibit sponsored by the educational publishers Scholastic Inc., New York. The counties eligible to participate in this region are Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Ashtabula. Participating in our region this year are 73 art educators from 70 participating schools with 600 works by approximately 575 area pupils including paintings, ceramics, drawings, graphic design, jewelry, computer graphics, mixed media, photography, printmaking and sculpture.
Regional Scholastic Award recipients will receive their awards at a private ceremony and their names and awards will be released to the public next Saturday. Awards given include best of show, gold keys, silver keys, and art scholarships. Gold key winners, best of show and gold key portfolio nominees are the only regional works sent to New York to compete in the national awards.
The Scholastic Art Awards program is administered nationally by the Alliance for Young Artists & amp; Writers, Inc. Since 1923, the Scholastic Art & amp; Writing Awards have encouraged more than 13 million pupil participants, recognized more than 2.5 million young artists and writers, and distributed more than 25 million in awards and scholarships.
Hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays through Saturdays, and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesdays. The museum is open to the public, and admission is free.
