YOUNGSTOWN -- Dana School of Music at YSU has found a concert venue that is a perfect fit.
Next week, the school will launch a spring concert series at the 600-seat Ford Family Recital Hall in the DeYor Center for the Performing Arts.
Titled Dana at the DeYor, the series is a partnership between the school and the Youngstown Symphony Society with additional support from WYSU, 88.5-FM. An anonymous donor provided the funds to cover the hall rental fees, said Joseph Edwards, dean of the College of Fine and Performing Arts at Youngstown State University.
In the past, the Dana School of Music held concerts and recitals at halls that were sometimes either too big or too small. "Stambaugh Auditorium and Powers Auditorium are designed to hold a lot larger audience than we ever have," said Edwards.
Planning
The Dana at the DeYor series was several years in the making.
"When the Symphony Society first told us [four or five years ago] that they were going to build the new hall, we knew it would be perfect for us, and we wanted to develop a series," said Edwards. Ford Family Recital Hall opened in the spring of 2006.
Edwards is hoping the Dana at the DeYor series attracts some new faces to their concerts. The intimate Ford puts audiences in close proximity to the orchestra and is "acoustically satisfying," said Edwards.
"We hope people will feel more comfortable [at Ford Family Recital Hall] and will want to come down to concerts," he said, noting the DeYor complex has its own restaurant, Overture.
The Dana will still hold some concerts at its 200-seat campus recital hall and at Stambaugh and Powers, as audience demands warrant.
