The Youngstown Symphony Orchestra presents a concert of three masterpieces and audience favorites: Barber's "Adagio for Strings," "Haydn's Symphony No. 49 and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5. Shinik Hahm will be the guest conductor. Tickets for the concert, which begins at 8 p.m. at Powers Auditorium, Youngstown, can be purchased at the Powers box office or by calling (330) 744-0264.
Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. today for Blue Man Group. The Men In Blue bring their How to be a Megastar Tour 2.0 to Youngstown's Chevrolet Centre on March 8. The trio embraces the rules and rituals of the arena rock concert in the show. First, they download a "how-to" manual on becoming a rock star. Then they are joined by an eight-piece band, and the combined group goes through the steps of a concert -- every head-bobbing, fist-pumping moment -- with audience interaction. The Skating Club of Greater Youngstown will hold an open skate and fun clinic from 3-5 p.m. at Chevrolet Centre, featuring giveaways to the first 50 ice skaters, prizes, games and demonstrations. When a family of red shouldered hawks took up residence in a tall oak tree in front of YSU's Maag Library, Dr. Rashid Abdu decided to photograph the campus visitors. From the library's sixth floor windows, Abdu shot a series of photographs that include the arrival of a baby hawk. The photos will be placed on exhibit at the Butler Institute of American Art's Sweeney Gallery. The exhibit opens today with an artist's reception from 1 to 3 p.m. and continues until July.
Esotto Pellegrini was the principal trumpet player in the first concert of the W.D. Packard Concert Band in 1955, and held the position for the next 40 years. "Pelly," as he was known, was a graduate of Youngstown's Wilson High School and Youngstown State University. He became the band director at North Lima High School and later, a professor of trumpet at YSU's Dana School of Music. He also performed with the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra and many other musical ensembles. Pellegrini died last year, but he is remembered as an outstanding musician whose quality of performance transcended all styles, be it classical, contemporary, jazz or pop.
The W.D. Packard Concert Band will pay tribute to Pellegrini with a tribute concert. The free 3 p.m. concert will be held at Packard Music Hall in Warren.
The touring production of "Aida" comes to Powers Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. The musical tells the story of a love triangle between Aida, a Nubian princess stolen from her country; Amneris, an Egyptian princess; and Radames, the soldier they both love. The epic tale of love, loyalty, betrayal and courage includes an exhilarating Tony and Grammy award-winning score by Elton John and Tim Rice. Stambaugh Auditorium will hold a romantic evening of dancing at its Valentine Dance on Feb. 11. The Don Burns Orchestra and the Sunrise Serenaders will perform the music of Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Harry James and others from the Big Band era, resurrecting a time when the Stambaugh Ballroom was home to the great swing bands. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with music from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Hors d'oeuvres will be served and a cash bar will be available.
