When a family of red shouldered hawks took up residence in a tall oak tree in front of YSU's Maag Library, Dr. Rashid Abdu decided to photograph the campus visitors. From the library's sixth floor windows, Abdu shot a series of photographs that include the arrival of a baby hawk. The photos will be placed on exhibit at the Butler Institute of American Art's Sweeney Gallery. The exhibit opens today with an artist's reception from 1 to 3 p.m. and continues until July.
Esotto Pellegrini was the principal trumpet player in the first concert of the W.D. Packard Concert Band in 1955, and held the position for the next 40 years. "Pelly," as he was known, was a graduate of Youngstown's Wilson High School and Youngstown State University. He became the band director at North Lima High School and later, a professor of trumpet at YSU's Dana School of Music. He also performed with the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra and many other musical ensembles. Pellegrini died last year, but he is remembered as an outstanding musician whose quality of performance transcended all styles, be it classical, contemporary, jazz or pop.
The W.D. Packard Concert Band will pay tribute to Pellegrini with a tribute concert. The free 3 p.m. concert will be held at Packard Music Hall in Warren.
