Arbitration loss will cost YSU a bundle

YOUNGSTOWN —  A federal mediator has ruled that Youngstown State University erred when it declined to give its classified employees personal leave credit payments as outlined by state law.

The ruling, made retroactive to September 2004,   could be costly.

The YSU Association of Classified Employees, which filed a 2004 grievance over the issue,   said it will result in back payments to its members amounting to between $600,000 and $720,000.   Further, it will be applicable to other YSU employee groups (excluding faculty and top administrators) and could boost the university’s cost as high as $1.3 million, according to ACE.
