W.B.'s Sharp wins district crown

He's one of 16 area athletes who will compete at this year's state meet.
AKRON -- Nathan Sharp, the defending Division II 285-pound state wrestling champion, is one of 16 area athletes that will compete at this year's state meet in Columbus starting Thursday.
Sharp (41-1), who lost to Alliance High's Matt Walker in last week's sectional title match, decisioned Walker this time 8-4 for the district crown. The two athletes have met five times this season.
Ravenna won the team title with 138.5 points, while Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy was second with 124. West Branch placed 11th with 58.5.
Division III
In Division III district competition at Maple Heights High, Jackson-Milton's Matt Mascioli (119) and Joe Skaggs (152) will be making return trips to state. Both placed third.
Mascioli pinned Mike Bodziony of St. Peter Chaney in 4 minutes, 2 seconds for third place, while Skaggs pinned Dan Bogan of Wellington in 32 seconds after he decisioned him 7-5 in an earlier consolation match.
Tommy Shives (171) of South Range finished fourth to earn his state berth. He lost to Phil Martter of Woodridge in the consolation final.
Brookfield's Tristan Thompson is headed back to the state meet after he won the 125 crown.
He won by major decision (13-4) over Brent Runkle of Northewtern.
Ross Tice, who will also be returning to state, won a major decision (9-1) over Andrew Scavuzzo of Woodridge for the 160-pound championship.
The Warriors' Mike Bender was pinned by Ryan Thatcher of Loudonville in the 152-pound title match.
Brad Harnett of Brookfield, who also will be going back to state, lost a 12-2 major decision to Josh Newenschwander of Dalton to finish fourth at 135 pounds.
Bedford Chanel won the team title with 163 points. Burton Berkshire was second with 125.5, Waynesdale was third with 115 and Brookfield fourth with 111.5.
Jackson-Milton placed 12th with 52, South Range was 28th with 17.5 and Warren JFK 32nd with 14.
