Amnesty to present Darfur series at SRU
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- The Slippery Rock University chapter of Amnesty International will focus the spotlight on the conflict-ridden Darfur region of western Sudan, Africa, when it presents "Genocide: The Crisis in Darfur" this week.
The weeklong series is designed to increase awareness about the region that has been devastated by the conflict between rival military groups since 2003. As many as 2.5 million people are believed to have been displaced by the fighting.
The series will end with a multiuniversity summit with a keynote address by Phil Wilhelm of Washington, D.C., who works with an organization focused on genocide. He just returned from several months in the Darfur region. A panel of participants from 16 regional colleges and universities will discuss the issue in the afternoon session.
The week's programs, all free and open to the public, are:
Monday: "Darfur Diaries," a documentary, at 7 p.m. in Advanced Technology and Science Hall Auditorium.
Tuesday: A "Peace Party" with games from 6 to 8 p.m. in University Union.
Wednesday: A faculty panel discussion on "Genocide in Darfur" at 7 p.m. in Advanced Technology and Science Hall Auditorium.
Thursday: Candlelight vigil at 7 p.m. in the Bailey Library Quad.
Saturday: Darfur Summit, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Advanced Technology and Science Hall Auditorium.
