Trumbull candidates list culled

WARREN — Two people who filed to run in the May 8 primary election won’t be candidates because their petitions were rejected today by the Trumbull County Board of Elections.

Board members rejected petitions for Newton Falls mayoral candidate Charles Richard Homa II for lack of valid signatures on his petitions.

That leaves two others, Patrick D. Layshock and incumbent Thomas A. Moorehead, to square off in November.

However, board members were told by their legal adviser, James Saker of the county prosecutor’s office, that they must wait until March 7 to determine whether a primary will be held in the city because a write-in will have until that date to file in that race. If none files, there would be no primary election in Newton Falls, officials said.

The other candidate disqualified was incumbent Niles 1st Ward councilman David Wilkerson, who did not complete the circulation statement on the forms. He was the only candidate to submit petitions for the seat.

Elections board members approved all of the other candidates and certified the results of the Feb. 6 special election.
