Officials to advertise for bridge-project bids

YOUNGSTOWN — Mahoning County commissioners have voted to advertise for bids for rehabilitation of the Spring Common Bridge in downtown Youngstown.

The contract for the $4 million, 18-month project is expected to be awarded in mid-April, with the work to begin shortly thereafter, said Marilyn Kenner, chief deputy county engineer. Half the bridge is to be closed at a time, with one lane of traffic maintained in each direction.

The project includes replacement of the entire concrete deck, any necessary repairs to the structural steel and concrete abutments and painting of all structural steel. Federal grants will pay 98 percent of the cost.

The bridge spans the Mahoning River, linking Mahoning Avenue with West Federal Street.
