Father accused of freezing toddler to death

Friday, February 23, 2007

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A man accused of leaving his young daughter outside in the freezing cold to die initially wanted to put her in the sewer, a police officer testified Friday.

Allegheny County homicide detective Robert Opferman said William Lorenzo Page told investigators he opted, instead, to leave Nyia Miangel Page in a playground.

After a preliminary hearing Friday, a district judge ordered Page, 23, of Braddock, to stand trial on several charges, including homicide, kidnapping, making false reports and aggravated assault.

The aggravated assault charge was added, prosecutors said, because Page allegedly told police that he kicked Nyia in the groin when she kept taking off her diaper.

Nyia, who was about to turn 2, was found dead Feb. 4 on a wooded knoll about a 10-minute walk from the family home.
