YOUNGSTOWN -- Junior thrower Bethany Anderson was named Horizon League female athlete of the week for the second straight week and third time this season.
Anderson provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor championship in the weight throw and set the school record for the third consecutive week at the Kent State Tune-Up.
She posted a distance of 63 feet, 7 inches to become the first female thrower in school history to provisionally qualify for nationals. Anderson ranks 23rd in Division I but needs to finish in the top 16 to earn a spot in the field.
Anderson's record-setting performance came one week before the Horizon League championship. She holds to top weight throw mark in the Horizon League by nearly 13 feet and she ranks second in the shot put. The Jamestown, N.Y., native swept the throwing events last season and won the shot put as a freshman.
Hockey
BOARDMAN -- The men's hockey club is seeded fifth at the College Hockey Mid America (CHMA) playoffs this weekend at the Harmarville Blade Runners Ice Complex in Pittsburgh, Pa.
The Penguins (16-15-0) will play fourth-seeded Slippery Rock University in the first round at 9 p.m. Friday.
If YSU wins it will play either No. 1 seed Washington & amp; Jefferson or No. 2 seed Indiana (Pa.) in a semifinal Saturday.
STEELHOUNDS
Youngstown wins 3-2
WICHITA -- The Youngstown SteelHounds began their three-game road trip Wednesday with a 3-2 shootout victory over the Wichita Thunder.
Scott Rozendal put Wichita ahead 1-0 midway through the first period, but Youngstown's Tab Lardner scored his 16th of the season on a shorthanded goal, tying the score at 3:07 of the second period.
The SteelHounds took the lead just four minutes later when Mark Johnson scored his seventh goal of the season.
Joe Blaznek tied the score for Wichita at 7:46 of the third period.
After a scoreless overtime, the SteelHounds' Jeff Christian, Chris Shaffer and Chris Richards scored in the shootout.
The win moved the SteelHounds (24-16-9) into a tie with Oklahoma City for the fourth place in the Northern Conference standings.
Youngstown travels to Memphis Friday night at 8:05 p.m.

Boardman youthselected for wrestling
BOARDMAN -- Sam Cambouris of Glenwood Middle School was selected to participate in the People to People International Games as a wrestling in Vienna, Austria, June 22-July 2.
Cambouris will be coached by former Olympic Gold Medalist Rulon Gardner.
Cambouris led Glenwood in wins, pins, technical falls, takedowns, and near falls this season.
In 2003, he placed second at the Iroquois Junior Wrestling Open and second at sectionals in 2004. In 2006, he placed at 122 pounds at the East Liverpool Potters Classic Tournament and at 116 pounds at the Eastern Ohio Wrestling League Middle School tournament.

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. -- Youngstown's Bob Eckenrode earned 1,000 for a ninth-place finish in the PBA Bayer Classic at Emerson Lanes Wednesday.
Eckenrode's 7-game pinfall total was 1,624.
Warren's Jim Wolcott was 37th with 1,511.

Wheldon has mixedresults at test
HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- Former IRL IndyCar Series champion Dan Wheldon hit the wall Wednesday night not long after turning the fastest lap on the first of two days of an open test under the lights at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
The IRL will open its season for the first time with a night race on the 1.5-mile Homestead oval March 24.
Wheldon, now driving for Chip Ganassi Racing after winning the title with Andretti Green Racing, had a fast lap of 214.858 mph in his Honda-powered Dallara.
Second-year AGR driver Marco Andretti was close behind Wheldon at 213.823, followed by Scott Dixon, Wheldon's teammate, at 213.693, Penske Racing's Helio Castroneves at 213.543 and AGR's Dario Franchitti at 213.504.
Reigning Indianapolis 500 and series champion Sam Hornish Jr., who will fly out of Homestead after today's final test to prepare for a NASCAR Busch Series race at California Speedway, was sixth overall.
Flyers' Knublehas surgery
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Philadelphia Flyers forward Mike Knuble had two plates inserted in his face during surgery Wednesday to fix his broken right cheekbone and right orbital bone.
Knuble was injured Saturday when he collided with New York Rangers Brendan Shanahan.
