Randolph Street standoff ends with arrest; one dead

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown Patrolman Dave Wilson, a hostage negotiator, was called to the 300 Randolph Street just before noon today and was able to talk out a man, who said he had been robbed, and was threatening to kill himself.

Wilson said the man "was talking suicide by cop." Police made the arrest around 12:30 p.m. The man had a blood-stained white shirt and wore a red cap.

The original call into police around 11:30 a.m. It was reported that a man had been shot in the two-story brick house house, at 376 Randolph, just off Salt Springs Road, on the city's West Side.

When an ambulance and police officers arrived, the man inside threatened to shoot police. Wilson said a man was found inside the house, apparently shot to death. The Mahoning County coroner arrived at the scene at 1:11 p.m.

There were between 40 to 50 law enforcement officers who converged at the scene, along with assorted police equipment, including the armored vehicle called "The Bear," and a police dog from the Austintown Police Department.
