Overdue support paid
YOUNGSTOWN -- The zero tolerance anti-crime crackdown, in which police and the Ohio State Highway Patrol have recently been stopping numerous motorists in this city, has resulted in a secondary benefit: the collection of delinquent child support, which motorists must pay to get their driver's licenses reinstated so they can drive legally, a county official said. On Tuesday, the Mahoning County Child Support Enforcement Agency collected 7,000 in support from 15 walk-in delinquent parents seeking to have their suspended driver's licenses reinstated, Judee Genetin, agency director, told county commissioners Wednesday. "Ten of those people said that they were there because of the elevated police coverage," she reported. License suspension and reinstatement workers at CSEA were "very busy on Tuesday," Genetin said.
Arrested at school
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 15-year-old Odyssey School of Possibilities student was arrested Tuesday and charged with assault on a teacher. A deputy working security at the city school on Commonwealth Avenue said he saw the East Lucius Avenue boy use his open hands to strike an assistant principal in the chest. The boy was taken to a timeout room but continued to struggle and threaten, reports show. He was then taken to the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center.
No class expansion
SALEM -- The Salem Board of Education has voted not expand the school day from seven to eight periods.
Board members Sean Hart, Cathy Hergenrother and Joe Rottenborn voted Tuesday against the proposal. Board President Elizabeth Thatcher and member Marguerite Miller voted for it.
The move would have allowed for more but shorter classes, especially enrichment classes.
Superintendent Stephen Larcomb said the expansion would have added about 10 minutes to a school day.

2 arrested after stop
YOUNGSTOWN -- Assorted loose baby clothes still with Dollar General sale tags attached and no receipt were found during a traffic stop that resulted in the arrest of a man wanted on three warrants and of a driver without a valid license, police said. The driver, Kevin Pullen, 28, of Selma Avenue, was charged with driving under suspension when stopped Tuesday evening on Elm Street for a red light violation. His passenger, Jermaine Mobley, 34, of Kendall Avenue, was turned over to Liberty police. Reports show he was wanted by Liberty on warrants charging theft and a traffic violation. He was also wanted on a felony theft warrant by Austintown police. The baby items were logged as evidence after police described the men to the Dollar General manager and he said the description matches two men who had been in the Belmont Avenue store at 6:30 p.m.
