Notre Dame ousts Geneva from AMC tourney
Geneva's women tied a school record for victories in beating Houghton.
SOUTH EUCLID -- Jerome Pierce scored 45 points as Notre Dame (Ohio) rallied from a 14-point deficit to defeat Geneva 94-93 in overtime in the first round of the American Mideast Conference tournament Wednesday.
Jermaine Ferguson led Geneva with 31 points, a season-high, on 13-of-24 shooting. Richard Colick added 17 points for the Golden Tornadoes (14-16), who were hurt by a 10-of-24 performance at the foul line, including 1-for-6 in overtime.
Walsh 80, Ohio Dominican 65
NORTH CANTON -- Eder Araujo scored 19 points for Walsh (25-5) in an AMC tournament game.
Brandon Weems added 17 points and eight assists for the Cavaliers, who play Roberts Wesleyan Saturday in a semifinal. Corey Jones, Adam Lesch and Josh Johnson (Warren Harding) all scored 11.
Bryan West scored 16 points for Ohio Dominican (15-16).
California (Pa.) 65,Slippery Rock 63
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Glenn Reepmeyer had 16 points and 10 rebounds for The Rock, who came up just short against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West-leading California (Pa.)
Jamar Scales added 12 points for Slippery Rock (5-21, 2-9), while Kenny Smith -- whose last-second 3-pointer missed -- and Joseph Vines scored 11 each.
California (20-5, 8-2) was led by Osborne Gardner and Kelvin Green with 18 points each. Theron Colao finished with 16.
Women
BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- Geneva's Allyson Clarke scored 22 points, Kylee Kittner added 18, and the Golden Tornadoes tied a school record for victories with a 72-53 victory over Houghton (N.Y.) in the first round of the American Mideast Conference tournament.
Clarke also had 14 rebounds for Geneva (22-4), which tied the 1996-97 team for victories in a season.
Leah French led Houghton (13-15) with 14 points. Erika Forland added 12 points and eight rebounds, and Jessica Smith scored 10 points.
Geneva plays host to Tiffin Saturday in the conference tournament semifinals.
California (Pa.) 70,Slippery Rock 67
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Lindsay Johnson and Bre Dillon sank two foul shots each in the final 15 seconds, allowing California (Pa.) to escape with a victory.
Chere' Marshall, who along with Jessica Schake led The Rock with 13 points, made two free throws with 1:39 remaining to give SRU (9-15, 3-7 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West) a 67-65 lead.
April Smith made one of two free throws for the Vulcans with 48 seconds left to make it a one-point game, and Johnson was fouled with 15 seconds to go while rebounding a missed Slippery Rock shot. Her two free throws gave California a 68-67 lead. Marshall's shot was blocked by Kim Nowakowski and Dillon was fouled with four seconds left. She made both shots and Amanda Nero's 3-pointer at the buzzer was off.
Nero (Lowellville) had 12 points for Slippery Rock, which led 36-29 at halftime.
Dillon led all scorers with 27 points. Nowakowski added 17 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, and Brooque Williams scored 10 points for California (17-7, 8-2).
