Girard junior/senior high project detailed

GIRARD — Girard school officials want residents to approve borrowing money to build a new junior/senior high school — now they are letting residents know exactly where that building would be and how much it would cost.

The money would be borrowed through the sale of bonds, and repaid with revenues from a tax levy.

School officials, at a meeting today, announced that the most recent plans to build a junior/senior high school facility call for the building to be placed on Shannon Road near Beaver Street and Goist Lane. The school district would pay $200,000 for the 22.6 acres of land.

According to school Board President Phil Fisher, the cost of the building project is about $26 million. The state would pay 80 percent of the that leaving the district to pay   20 percent,   or about $5.2 million.

Fisher said the board will be placing a 4.3 mill levy on the may ballot to cover the district’s 20 percent share.

The school board tried to pass a similar levy in 2005 under the Ohio School Facilities Commission program, but that was rejected by voters.
